| Alzheimers Disease: the brain, the genes, the promise of vaccines
St. Louis, March 6, 2000 A 3-D tour of a human brain will highlight a free program about the latest advances in Alzheimers disease. The Saturday morning event will take place March 18 in the Saint Louis University Practical Anatomy Workshop Auditorium, 3839 Lindell Blvd. It is part of Brain Awareness Week, sponsored nationally by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience.
The Practical Anatomy Workshop features an 18-foot projection screen and 3-D projection system. Wearing 3-D glasses, participants will get an intimate view of the brains interior as Washington University anatomist Daniel McKeel, M.D., dissects a human brain and discusses brain pathology. Alison Goate, D. Phil., from Washington University will discuss recent research on genetic factors that increase the risk of Alzheimers disease. Robin Eastwood, M.D., from Saint Louis University will talk about the epidemiology of Alzheimers disease. And Bob Vassar, M.D., from Amgen Inc. will describe his groundbreaking research on a key component of Alzheimer pathology and talk about related work that might lead to an Alzheimer vaccine within a few years. Alzheimers disease currently affects approximately 4.5 million Americans.
